How to Avoid Procrastination and Actually Do Some Work

Procrastination is a problem that affects many people. It is the inability to focus on the task at hand, while finding many distractions in the world around you. Many refer to it as a short attention span, but most people just see it as laziness. There are many things you can do to prevent procrastination, but it would be a lie to say it will be easy. This isn’t something that will go away overnight either; it’s something that needs to be worked at daily.

Here are a few steps to avoid procrastination:

• Turn off anything that makes noise. This includes the television, radio, and even as much as closing the windows to outside. Studies have shown that the majority of people find it severely hard to concentrate on anything else when there is a background noise filtering through what they are trying to do. By getting rid of the noise, you get rid of the distraction.

• Turn off your cell phone and unplug your phone. With the technologies in cell phones today, it is very easy to get distracted by texting, games, and other things that can be found in phones. A home phone doesn’t have these perks, but if your phone rings and it is someone you could talk to for a while, this is a bad distraction as well. By shutting off the phones, these distractions no longer become a problem.

• Take away all video games, movies, anything considered entertainment. You can face it: video games are fun to play, movies are fun to watch; there is a lot of fun in the world. So, if you need to do something like wash the dishes or sweep the floor, it’s going to be hard when there are so many other things to do that are much more fun. You need to get rid of those fun things, before you can really get to work.

Short of locking yourself in a solitary room where there is only the task at hand and you, it may seem impossible to get your act together and get the task completed. The key is to limit the distractions as much as you can. On a relatively hot day, you aren’t going to want to do anything but head to the beach. You can’t turn the weather off, and shutting the window will make it a lot hotter. This is where your will power comes into question. You need to have some sort of ability to help yourself in order to get help for your procrastination problem.

This is a problem that many people face, but unlike many other personality flaws that people have, procrastination isn’t something you are stuck with forever. By following the techniques above, you will find there are a lot less distractions to prevent you from completing the tasks that you need to. From keeping the house clean to getting your homework done, no matter what your age is, these are the things that will ultimately help you actually get work done.
